Law Revue – Council Brief (May 2007)
Nursery Crimes
The Wellington Law Revue 2007
The cast has been called. The beanstalk has been built. The dances are being danced and the songs are being sung. Nursery Crimes is ready to go. Now we’d like an audience.
Nursery Crimes will be performed live on 17, 18 and 19 May at Memorial Theatre on Victoria University’s Kelburn campus.
Nursery Crimes is a mad-cap comedic celebration of New Zealand and international society and politics. Law Revues intend to entertain and to provide a light-hearted and good-humoured reflection of legal people and practices, and Nursery Crimes features lawyers, politicians, professionals and their clients in a series of hilarious skits, songs and stories. There’s certainly plenty to entertain lawyers and non-lawyers alike.
Principal sponsor Bell Gully and the Wellington District Law Society are proudly presenting Nursery Crimes, in association with Minter Ellison Rudd Watts, Chapman Tripp, Russell McVeagh, Thomson Brookers and Hughes Castell. The generous support of its sponsors enables Nursery Crimes to really crank things up a gear with improvements in lighting, sound, costuming and set. The cast and crew may be mostly amateurs, but they’re putting on a professional show.
Come and see your colleagues, your classmates, and your peers in the profession. The cast and crew are comprised of students and young professionals, who work in the public sector, with the judiciary, in law firms, in corporate entities and in legal publishing. These are people who you usually see at work, at school, in Court or at Dockside on a Friday night.
The cast and crew have been working hard, with planning starting in mid-2006, script-writing starting in October and rehearsals starting in March. Dance moves have been learned by people with varying levels of skill, but high levels of enthusiasm. Paintbrushes have been wielded, animal costumes have been made and considerable quantities of pizza and wedges have been consumed.
Nursery Crimes follows in the footsteps of previous Wellington Law Revues including “Law of the Rings”, “I Fought the Law (and the Law Won)” and 2006’s “Once Were Litigators” in presenting a story, as well as providing satire, physical comedy and some things that are just a little risqué in the form of the skits and songs. This year, the Law Revue presents a sweet and simple modern fairytale about four law graduates, who hit the road looking for law jobs. On the way they encounter situations and characters that test their skills and their patience.
Tickets are available from the WDLS Reception at 26 Waring Taylor Street, from the cast and crew, from the Law School Reception and by emailing lawrevue@gmail.com. Go into the draw to win a double pass to the night of your choice, by emailing the answer to the following question to lawrevue@gmail.com: What was the name of the 2006 Law Revue? The prize will be drawn and the winner notified on May 10.
The Bar will be open from 7pm, with the curtain going up at 8pm. Running time 120 minutes. Rated L. Contains legal content that will entertain most viewers.
